About this episode

Just did an interview with the CEO of Gitlab, Sid Sibrandij.

Gitlab is a multibillion dollar company that helps developers become more efficient with less stress.

One of the most interesting values they have is that they are totally transparent. They post lots of their meetings and code reviews to youtube so that everyone can see. I was able to ask Sid pretty much anything about the company and he would answer.

This could be a source of stress because there is always this line between honesty and kindness. There is such a thing as being too honest and it can hurt people.

A really interesting side effect of their strategy of transparency and publishing everything online is they get a whole lot of business because people just find them. That's how I found them too!

Hi, my name is Stuart Alsop, and this is my podcast, Crazy Wisdom, where I interview creative people about how they work with and manage the stress that is inherent in creative work. What I've realized over the past 10 years of my research is that anybody who is creating something of value that is significantly different from what has come before is considered crazy. Most of us have a fear, an ingrained fear of going crazy. So what I'm saying is grab onto that fear, realize that it's there, and just go with it. Because the problems we're going to be facing over the next 20 years require crazy people in order to solve them.

Foreign. Welcome. Today we. We do a livestream interview about stress and creativity in the context of remote work. I'm Sid, the co founder and CEO at GitLab, and I'm joined by Stuart. Stuart, maybe you can introduce yourself and feel free to start with the questions.

Of course. Yeah. My name is Stuart Alsop, and I run the podcast Crazy Wisdom, where I interview creative people about how they work with stress and relationship between stress and creativity. And so I wanted to talk to Sid, particularly because GitLab has such a effective means for remote work. And I want to talk about what is the relationship between stress and creativity, particularly in the context of remote work, because a lot of people view remote work as particularly stressful. Not in a way, in the same way that stress is in terms of having, you know, a difficult boss to work with, but in terms of just being on your own and not having people around you, which is, you know, evolutionarily, maybe the way that we were dying to work. And so, Sid, I wanted to ask you, what is your personal opinion on this kind of connection between stress and creativity?
