Welcome to the Crazy Wisdom Podcast. My guest today is Matthew Gialic. He is the co founder and CEO at Astroforge, and they were part of the YC Winter 22 batch. Welcome to the show.
So you guys are doing asteroid mining. So interesting. What have you learned about asteroids recently?
About asteroids recently? Look, I think as a human species, we've learned a lot about asteroids in the last two decades. I mean, if you look back to the turn of the century, we knew about very few of a certain class of asteroid that we call a near earth asteroid, or one that's fairly close to Earth. And as of today, we know a lot more about them, right? We've studied them a lot. We've developed bigger telescopes, more telescopes that can capture them. These are pretty dim objects in the sky that we want to go after, but because of that, we now know a lot more about not only their mineralogy, but just where they are and how many there are. And so it's really opened up this whole regime for us to go explore that no longer tells the story of going to the asteroid belt. I think that's a big kicker here, right? If you had to look at asteroid mining as we look at it in Hollywood or as we looked at it before, it's all been about the asteroid belt. And the. The problem with the asteroid belt is it's not very close. It's pretty far away, right? It's between Mars and Jupiter. Like, that's a long trip to go make. So, number one, we learned there's a lot of asteroids closer. And I would say this, now that we're out there really trying to study our targets as we go forward. We spend a lot of time with telescopes with different sensors trying to understand detailed information about every one of these bodies we want to go after.
