Welcome to the Crazy Wisdom Podcast. I've got Neil Davis here and he is working on the Xteligencer project. He's been on a few times. And welcome back to the show.
So this has been a writing project that I've been kicking around various aspects of for probably close to a decade at this point. But what it's evolved into is what I think of as an operational handbook for the dark Forest. If you're familiar with Dark Forest, no.
So this is a cosmological theory that was originally devised to explain why we do not hear, you know, alien life forms or radio signals, other things from extraterrestrial sources. And the, you know, the original problem is essentially, why don't we see life out in the universe? And one, one, you know, many solutions have been put forward. You know, life is rare, life is more advanced than us and doesn't think to look for us because we're like ants, other kinds of things. One of one possible solution to this that was used by Cixin Liu in his the second volume of his Three Body Problem trilogy is that we are in a dark forest. And the idea being that when you are in a dark forest, if you make a noise in that dark forest, you draw the attention of hunters and predators in that dark forest and are eliminated. And so your evolutionary equilibrium is actually towards stealth, camouflage, and silence in operation. To make it more specific here, what I imagine as I work through this project is that more or less we live in a world in which every aspect of broader society that we interact with is, is to some extent a dark forest. That means that there are hostile actors, operators, parasites, all sorts of exploitative processes that can be drawn to your location by you making certain kinds of legible noises, you know, acting in certain ways, you know, you know, trivially. This is a con man looking for a mark, you know, in a con man behaves in certain ways that. That calls out the mark. You know, a mark might be someone who feels more altruistic than the norm. It might be someone who feels more confident at their ability to spot a con than the norm. You know, like, there are a lot of reasons that a con might be drawn to a mark. But, you know, essentially, we. We live in a world where there are these competing processes, you know, in. In play in every arena in which we operate. And. And the Internet, artificial intelligence processes, to some extent are fueling this as well. But, you know, really just the Internet itself has. Has made this suddenly an urgent civilizational crisis in a way that was not previously apparent. Why?
