About this episode

Bill Tai is a very successful entrepreneur and investor. Not only is he successful according to

external validators of success, but he is also humble and shares his knowledge and brilliance

without expectation of reciprocation. It is a rare gift to be both successful and humble, and

our conversation contains actionable wisdom to do this.

Even though my podcast is primarily about meditation and its effect on creativity, we veered

into talking about the history of work and how technology is contributing to a lot of change. A

fundamental component of mindfulness training is the realization that everything is

impermanent and change is the only constant. We are entering a period of rapid change. Bill

gives some good insights on how to capitalize on this trend.

I think the most valuable thing I got out of this conversation is that whether rich or poor, you

have to find the thing that lights you up on the inside. For Bill, that activity is kitesurfing. It is

the keystone activity for which the rest of his life is rejuvenated by. Listen to this episode if

you want to find actionable insights into how to find joy in your life.

Guest00:00

There's a quote that I love from Woody Allen, which is, 80% of life is just showing up. But I always add to that. But it's showing up at the right place at the right time. Right. So you'll see people that they were in the right company at the right time, they did financially really well, and others that could be really smart, but they're not in the right place. Right. And then there's this other phrase that, you know, I'd rather be lucky than smart. Absolutely. The case, but be being smart is about putting yourself on the right path of luck. You got to put yourself in front of the wave. I think if you can be efficient about seeing the big picture, where the waves are breaking, where opportunities are, and put yourself in front of those, you're going to do better because the small amount of energy you spend has bigger impact.

Stewart Alsop III00:49

Hey, my name is Stuart Alsop, and this is my podcast, Crazy Wisdom, where I interview creative people about their meditation, mindfulness, and yoga practices and how those practices help them tap into creative flow. I interviewed Bill Tai today. We talked about some really interesting stuff, including his windsurfing practice and how that is a form of meditation. I've been finding a lot that people have a lot of preconceived notions of what meditation is. And in this interview, we found out that anything can be a meditation, including kite surfing, because something as extreme as kite surfing can bring you into the present moment better than any sitting meditation ever could. So I invite you to open your mind as to what meditation is so that you can find the right meditation practice for you. And of course, if you like this podcast, please subscribe on itunes.
